Hello, looking for advice on a home office + amateur photography backup solution. What I have come up with is a rather costly solution ($2200 Amazon) and wondering if it’s overkill.
I am wondering if there was a more affordable option but I do like the SSD drives. This is what I have come up with Synology DS920+ and Seagate 4TB SSD (3) .

My 2.5” USB-C 2-bay enclosure + 5 TB spinner for TM and a 2 TB SSD for a clone would cost $350 today.

From what I have read spinning disk are more reliable and cheaper when it comes to long term storage. They may not be as fast but in a NAS that may not be an issue.

SSDs shouldn't be used for long term storage since it's more volatile than hard drives as it needs to be powered on once in a while or it will loose data. A more viable option is to get 16-20 TB hard drives and use RAID 10 or ZFS. Do not RAID5 them as it will take too long to rebuild.

I have a 2-bay Synology DS220+ with a single 4TB Western Digital Red Pro NAS HDD... setup was less than $500 back in 2021. I use it for a media server atm.

Keep in mind that you don't need a super fast drive for storage/backup solutions. SSDs are best for actual application driven functions... such as editing your photos... not for storage.

HDDs still serve a function. If SSDs were a viable replacement, they (HDDs) would have all disappeared by now.
