NAS Drive for Time Machine Backups

I've connected my macOS server (Mac Mini) to my Synology RS815+ NAS and loaded the folder where I wanted to place my macOS server managed Time Machine backups. However, I cannot get Time Machine to show the drive on other machines. It lists macOS server and has (null) for the drive. If I select the macOS server's local disk, it becomes available to all my other computers.

Is there a trick to get this to work? I am currently backing up directly to the NAS, but I want to manage all backups via macOS server.

Not sure but would a symlink of sorts work? Where the symlink on the Server is the target and the link goes to your NAS. Only issue would be to make sure that the link is "hot" as in the NAS is spun up and fully connected.

Also perhaps a way of doing similar to the above but using an iSCSI protocol.

Just set up an iSCSI drive with GlobalSAN. Still wouldn't work.

In the Synology Control Panel, open up "File Services", then under "Mac File Service", select the folder you want to be in Time Machine in the "Time Machine: dropdown.

I have a current Time Machine there now. I'm wanting to change it so that TM backups go through my macOS server. Will this allow that?

Can I run a USB cable from my Mac Mini to my Synology NAS and hook it up that way? Not sure if that would work or not.

To my knowledge you need to hook up a SAN instead of a NAS for the server to share drives, sharepoints and time machine locations.

As a test use some free space from the internal drive. That should work.
