Issues with Buffalo Linkstation
Hi guys
Was thinking of putting in a Linkstation Live NAS.
Will I have any issues sharing the content on my son's PC.
Want to use it for ATV movies, it would be good if he can access them also.
Cheers Phil
Hi Phil. I can't speak for the LinkStation Live, but about 2 months ago I purchased a LinkStation Pro Duo 1TB NAS and I am not entirely satisfied. Part of the issue is me I'd bet. I began using Macs about 20 years ago because they generally are easy to work with and I just don't like resolving technical issues.
As for the LinkStation, the Buffalo NAS Navigator software was a snap to install and the pdf manual is relatively thorough, but....
#1) I discovered this by trying to change the administrator password from the default password, "password". The NAS uses a network filling system called "SMB" which does not allow for special characters such as # % & *. After rejecting my choosen password a few times, I figured out what was happening. Fair enough. So I don't use the special character, the password is accepted, and suddenly I'm locked out and can no longer login as the administer.
#2) Tried to follow the instructions in the manual for resetting the password to the default "password." However, the instructions were apparently outdated and what I could find at the Buffalo support site was the same. Numerous attempts to reset failed. Tech support was very friendly and helpful. Walked me through the reset process which was significantly different from the manual. Through trial and error I might have guessed how in a few hours.
#3) ... and what frustrates me the most, I can't seem to configure the NAS to access it from the internet. Other computers on the home LAN can get access, but that isn't what I want. The Buffalo instructions seem relatively clear on how to do this configuration, but it's automatic wizzard like process can't do this trick. It tells me that I need to manually configure port 9000 or some such. WTF is that and where is it and how does this configuration get done???? For this, I refer you back to my original comment about not liking to resolve tech issues like this. I just want to use the damn thing, not spend hours trying to get it to work.
So yesterday I was shopping for a replacement. My LinkStation is going to be a nice back up drive I think.
Good Luck
