When do we think have true 4k native playback on iPad/iPad Pro devices? I know I can record and edit 4k videos and I can playback UHD videos from iTunes/Amazon etc, but I am talking about actually having a 4k iPad display capable of playing said content. Beyond price, is battery the main thing that is holding devices back?

I’m no expert on the topic but once you have 4K resolutions on these comparatively small screens would this not also potentially stress the GPUs more and create more heat?

Most likely yes which is why I think they are not doing it and I wonder if they ever will. If they cannot control the heat they won't do it-they don't want a Samsung type fiasco when their phones could not be taken on planes.

When they up the screen resolution to 4k

Isn't pricing going to be a factor? If they cost of the display is $500 alone, I wonder if they would even bother.

Afaik, iTunes only has 1080p HDR max available to iOS devices for both download and streaming. Only AppleTV gets 4K streams.

Amazon only streams 720p, I think.

Mind, 4K is 3840*2160 while the Pro 12.9 is 2732*2048. I've streamed full quality 4K Blu-ray rip from local NAS to Infuse Pro and the Pro 12.9 does benefit from higher than 1080p resolution (sharper, better detail). Very sensitive to network conditions and taxing on wi-fi, though.

The Amazon Prime app streams only at 720p but accessing Prime videos through Safari will get 1080p.

I guess I am in that minority that wants the capability to do so.

I'm sure there are others.

The current 12.9" display can benefit from higher resolutions now so first, the content providers should allow 4K streaming to at least those (limit it to wifi if they have to). Otherwise, there's not much point apart from your own videos.

Personally, primary reason I'm not interested in a 4K iPad is because 16:9/16:10 aspect ratio tablets feel off-balance to me. Plus, it's an awful AR for letter-size PDFs.

I've also tried 4K playback on the Pro 10.5". On that one, couldn't really tell the difference between 1080p and 4K. Display's just too small.

What I do not get is why add WiFi 6 but not 5G? I really do not understand this release. And I think you are correct-most people won't be able to notice the difference on a small screen so why waste the resources. I was going to get one of these but now I will just keep my 10.5 inch 2017 iPad Pro and wait for the next one-and I am kinda sad but its hard to justify basically buying another computer when you add the accessories you would need to the total.
