Native AVCHD

Can anyone test out if an AVCHD video file will finally play natively in 10.7? I don't mean with Movist, but something that can actually be opened directly with Quicktime.

If you need an example file I could provide a link.

Nope, as I predicted it doesn't work.

There is no application set to open the document “00001.MTS”.

if you change the extension to .ts it plays fine in QuickTimeX.

.ts eh? That's....weird. How good does it look? Does it deinterlace? I wonder if we will get native support now in iMovie, or a video editor that actually works.

There's no deinterlacing :-/ Can't really comment on how it looks, played really choppy on my machine (anything High@L4.0 over craps out at <15mbits).

As for getting it in to iMovie: that's going to be a bitch. It didn't want to import as .ts, .mts or .m2ts. Also the audio is Dolby Digital, which I'm pretty sure it doesn't support. Opening the file in QTX and saving as a 'Movie' will allow iMovie to import it (all it does is remux in to .mov), however, this means that iMovie will re-encode it before you can actually use it. I would have tried this but apparently the QTX which I originally open the movie with was on my SL partition (which had QT7 installed), there's no QT7 for Lion yet, and QTX on SL partition has started crashing on launch.

If you don't want to let iMovie handle the re-encoding of your content you could use MPEG StreamClip to convert it to DV/MJPEG with PCM audio which iMovie will accept, but that process does take a while.

Well, renaming to .TS didn't help — require QT7 to play

One more — VLC plays but lags like a hell when under 10.6 it goes quite smooth.

That's pretty weak. W7 deals with these files with great aplomb, both playing and editing in many many programs. Really disappointed at that, I don't see how Apple can keep ignoring this considering the majority of HD consumer cams use this format.
