Does anyone have experience with the Navigon iPhone app and how it compares to a standalone unit? I found a decent looking refurbished TomTom unit on Amazon for about the same price as the Navigon App, which I had intended to buy. But this morning I went on Engadget and saw that Navigon had updated its app to include text-to-speech for street names, which is THE killer feature for me, so now I'm torn.

If anyone has any opinions on this, I'd appreciate them. Thanks!

I have just played with the new Navigon App and can't really give it a review yet. I did use the older app last week. Even using a windshield mount, I had trouble a couple of weeks ago keeping the GPS in the iPhone. (I did not have any trouble in my Civic, but I did in a rented PT Cruiser. When I could actually get signals the GPS app worked good however.

Unless you travel quite a bit and don't want to haul around more electronics (my situation) I would get the stand alone unit, as it should have a better GPS reception in "problem vehicles or areas." The extra screen size vs the iPhone is useful as well depending how close/far your windshield is.

I like the one device aspect. As I travel a lot for work this is a huge benefit for me.

As for GPS signal I have found that if you reset network settings the signal reception seems to be improved. As long as I keep it in view of the windshield my reception is great.
