Navigon with iPhone 3G?

I've read a number of threads from people and their experiences with Navigon software running on iPhone 3GS's. I have not seen many reviews with experiences on the 3G's. If you have any experience, good or bad, would you kindly share? I'm trying to make an educated decision on GPS software as I am going to retire my HP RX5900 pda running Tom Tom software. My 16GB iPhone 3G is approximately 4 months old, yeah jumped the gun just a hair too soon!!

Since the 3G and 3GS have the same GPS chip, your experience will be vastly the same. Only difference you might see is the initial route planning. I have it on my 3G and have no problem with running it and navigating around town.

Thanks for the post, Jeremy1026. I was concerned with the ram difference and processor speed difference that the 3G would not run the program smoothly. I'm glad to hear that you are pleased with your experience, THANKS for the information!!

My friend has a 3G with Navigon and we have used it several times on trips. Works well imo...

My 'old' 3G is now working quite well for my father using Navigon all over areas of urban and rural south Louisiana and Mississippi. He's now on 3.0.1 software and using a window mount and car charger with a Speck Toughskin case.

Thanks toxictrix and m3coolpix! I appreciate your input and experiences. I wasn't that impressed with the video and compass additions to the 3GS but in the ATT store compared my 3G startup time on a number of apps with a GS and it appeared to be blazingly faster. I suppose that is where my concern that I didn't have the processing power for a smooth experience came from!!

My iPhone 3G has performed much better than I had anticipated with Navigon.

Up until recently I had been using G-Map West and must say after using it several times was thoroughly disappointed.

Navigon has restored my hopes as to what a navigation app on the iPhone can be. I am thoroughly SATISFIED with how it has performed.

No problems whatsoever maintaining GPS lock and routes seem flawless.

Although it does take a little longer than I would like starting up (and returning back to my route after an incoming call interruption) I know that once I finally get to upgrade to iPhone 3gs that Navigon will be even more amazing.

Ouch your 3G is only 4 months old in Aug 09. If you are in a 2 year agreement that is a double ouchie . I got mine on launch day, but I didn't think it was worth upgrading to the new 3GS, not to mention I'm not elgible for upgrade pricing until October or November 09 or something. Which means I might as well wait until July 2010 when a new iPhone will probably be coming out (hopefully with even more RAM than 3GS and an even faster CPU )

However, I am feeling the burn of not upgrading. There are apps showing up that run better/look better on 3GS. One of them is Navigon. It runs a lot faster on a 3GS especially navigating the menus. I have it on my 3G and it runs it fine, but the experience isn't as smooth as it could be. I'm not trying to deter you, it will work acceptably, just not as good as it could be on a faster CPU with more RAM.

I have a 3G and use Navigon daily just for the fun of it on any driving trip.

If a lot of RAM is being used or I haven't restarted the phone in awhile, it will freeze up.

I have caught it freezing up on route planning before, and it wouldn't quit the app - I had to force restart the whole iPhone; but that's only happened once.

More frequently, it just chops up the street names it's trying to speak or goes silent. The program also runs slow (2-5 second lag after touching button for action to be completed).

All-in-all, it's still a good program. I'd recommend it for 3G users unless you are easily irritated. In my honest opinion, I am surprised it works so well on the 3G as it does.. when Apple came out with the 3GS I figured it'd only be a matter of time before RAM/processor intensive apps began surfacing and not working so well on the new-but-already-outdated 16GB 3G.

My experience is the same as the above. It performs fine on the whole, but I have found I need to reboot the phone every few days as 3G resources are not as robust as a 3Gs. Long as I do that all is fine. On the whole, I'm very pleased with the app and am glad I have it...especially for $69.
