I am officially starting a campaign to get around the blackout system used by both of these new ATV apps. Can we get the jailbreak devs started on a JB hack/patch to allow local games to be streamed? This will save me, and I'm sure numerous others, hundreds if not thousands of dollars a year if we can cut off our cable service and only use ATV with internet. Lets get this going! Hopefully the ones who can get a fix going read this :]

Brilliant idea, but that would involve spoofing your IP. I'm sure eventually MLB/NBA would find ways to detect spoofed IP's and block them.

It seems that 4.3 has some sort of Location Services for the ATV because it now supports time zone detection. Whether it's just simple IP geolocation or a location services framework similar to the mobile iOS devices I have no idea. A location framework probably could be faked, if it's just IP detection, it's much more difficult.

I contacted NBA League Pass support to complain that I didn't have cable (which I do) and the only way for me to watch my favorite team was over the internet, and they send me this reply word for word:

"The product is a companion to tv, not a replacement."

Looks like they aren't helping us cut the cords anytime soon :\
Hopefully we get a hack to allow this just to stick it to them!

i have comcast. and i have heard that sometimes even if you dont have a cable tv subscription, but you have cable internet you can get your local channels for free if they don't have block on the line. even if i had to pay 10 bucks a month for basic cable channels with out any cable box i would do that and drop the rest of the channel line up.

When I got my ATV, I dropped Comcast cable TV, kept the internet, and hooked an indoor antenna to the Tivo. Much better quality and I'm not missing much. When Airplay fully evolves, it'll be even better.

I can confirm that is the case with Time Warner, though I prefer my OTA antenna for HD picture quality.

I can only get the main channels OTA like FOX/NBC/ABC/CBS which is great for NFL games, but the reason I still need cable is for ESPN, Versus, Fox Sports, TNT. How long is the exclusive agreement that Microsoft has with ESPN? Any chance of seeing an ESPN3.com App for ATV come the June update?

You can do ESPN3 via XBMC on the ATV2 now - but you need to jailbreak. Works great.
