I’ve been upgrading my 5,1.

I’m on bootrom 144.0.0.0 & 10.14.6 with no immediate plans to do Opencore or dosdude (although I’ll probably do that in future years if the machine is still going strong).

The Sapphire RX 580 4GB got me this far but I need a card that is <2 slots. Would the WX7100 8GB be an upgrade or a downgrade for me at this stage?

I’d prefer boot screen compatible.

Machine’s use is mostly audio but with more video in its future. Currently using Premiere but may move to FCP.

If not the WX7100 then what?

[photo shows me trying to get me little riitop working at full speed. It worked but was thermally much worse (sonnet card blocking vid card fans I think).]

thanks for any advice you can offer, I know v little about GPUs!!

The RX580 scored 2552213 using Metal and 2552216 with openCL on geekbench Compute.

Just realising I can probably look this up myself...

EDIT: these numbers are totally wrong the correct numbers are Metal 47932 (geekbench 5), OpenCL 40429

What version of Geekbench are you using?
Ver5 result is 50k for an 8gb RX580.

Also look here for options

Just noticed I quoted the totally wrong geek bench numbers. I copied the ID instead of the Score!!!

On Metal the card scored 47932 (geekbench 5) and on OpenCL it scored 40429.

The problem with the GPU compatibility list is that it doesn’t state my card is larger than two slots (possibly some versions are not). So if I’m looking at an RX590 I can’t be sure it won’t be the same. The WX7100 is clearly only 1 slot wide which gives me the room I need and might be a winner thermally as well.

The WX7100 can be flashed for bootscreen by MacVidCards Europe in Poland.

Performance score seems to be a little less than the RX580, but I doubt you'll notice it in daily use.
