Need a new computer like NOW. iMac?

My computer just died yesterday. I have a small design business and i need to get work done because i have strict deadlines. I always used PCs because of the lower prices but i'd like to do the switch to Macs. I don't want to buy a MacPro because they're too expensive for me.
What would you say? Is it intelligent to buy an iMac now or is it possible that the update is really coming in the next weeks?

If you really need one now (like you say) then you'll get one asap.

If you're even considering holding off for the next update, then you really don't need one now.

Either way, you'll be getting a great computer.

I see you know what you're talking about. Alright I'm off to the repair service. If it's more than $400 I'll buy an i7 and hope it's fast enough
 
I know everyone is hung up on the benchmarks of sandy bridge and trying to wait to see what happens but if you buy an i7 right now you'll be grinning ear to ear when you get it home.

My i7 (current model) is a beast and you can't slow it down. I do everything from CAD to Photoshop to gaming and more and it is a treat to use every day.

I'm also looking at getting the 27" iMac with i7 , 2T hd. I'm just not sure about the RAM. Will I see a difference in upgrading to 8gb from the standard 4? I won't be using the iMac for "extensive" video editing etc . . I'm thinking about upgrading the RAM to "future proof" it. Figure it wouldn't hurt

In your situation, you probably will not see much of an increase over the stock 4gb. I added another 8gb from OWC for $115 to total 12gb and it is a huge benefit when doing things like large CAD and Photoshop files. Games also load a little faster when switching levels but the difference is hardly noticeable, would not be worth the upgrade if it were just for gaming.

I would buy the 4gb version and see for yourself if you really need it. You can always add it later at a much better price.

As for the 2TB drive. I always question why people make that upgrade. If you really need all of that space, you probably need more and will be buying external drives anyways. Get the 1TB or couple the 1 TB with an SSD to see a nice performance increase. External storage and network storage is cheap and reliable in comparison to Mac and not worth the Apple Tax.

As far as the 2TB hd, I was thinking about dumping everything from my PC onto the iMac and have plenty of room to grow. I have about 200 gbs of music and lots of photos and figured the $150 upgrade fee to the 2TB wasn't too bad

Yes but you could just get the 1tb that comes with the stock system and later purchase an additional 2tb or more for less than $150 and then you would have much more storage. Best Buy just had a WD 2tb external for $89.99.
 
Love my 27" i7..

I bought mine two weeks ago at the Apple Store because our old PC just wouldn't cooperate anymore. Best decision we ever made. It is awesome. :D Enjoy it whether you make the plunge now or later. it is worth every penny.
 
Alright. first impression: disapointed!!!

After i paid 2000$ for an imac first thing i see is a yellow screen, i'm starting to regret the decision

Run into Apple Store if you get the faulty yellow screen. You must get replacement for that.

And if you feel terrible or sorry about getting an iMac, sell your replacement soon, don't open it if you can, so you can claim that you sell it brand new :)

That way you can get better price, pretty much close from the price you paid for your iMac

Didn't you have them fire it up in the store and test it before you tool it home?

Or did you get it mail order?

I always pick up at the Apple Store, if I need it NOW I'll drive 2-3 hours if I have to. I hate getting high dollar items through delivery.

When I plunk down $2K, I wanna see it working in front of me.
 
Nah i let them put 4 more Gb of ram in that thing, they said ok, we'll just run a hardware test to see if everything is ok with your machine and they didn't do that in front of me but in their backroom. if i had known of the yellow screen issue i would have asked to see the screen before.
i'm going there later. i just hope they'll replace it right away, can't wait a week for a new mac

I also have a qustion for you, do you have the 2T plus the 256 SDD and if so why.
I will be buying a new iMac in 2 weeks time and was planning on going with the 1T plus the 256 SDD but I really dont know why I am doing that...........it just seemed the right thing to do, if you know what I mean??

Why not buy a cheap PC to tie you over for a while. New iMacs look to be coming very soon.

I haven't bought mine yet either. I'm planning on getting the 2T hd for $150 more. I'm not planning on adding the SSD. The $750 upgrade to do that is a bit much for me.

➤ Very BAD decision to switch to another operating system - especially if you don't know as much about it as your current one (and on top of it you'll have to buy + learn quirks of the diff. between 'same' software on both platforms - for example I have AutoCAD on both MAC & PC & it's NOT the same...) + you need to use it as proficiently right away.

2. Don't buy 1-piece computer for a design business venue ➤ you'll have to replace the whole thing if something goes wrong and you can't upgrade individual parts.

3. Get Mac Pro or similar (= real workstation, for example Cray CX1).

You are very right about all 3 points, but i know macs as i worked for 10 years on them at my workplaces and i did want to change to mac. as i'm very new in business i dont have the money to buy a macpro just like that, but i will buy one as soon as i can, the iMac will be the secondary computer i use for other stuff than design. so i need to buy the software anyways and i don't think that the iMac is a bad computer for design (when you work at nights like me, so that the glossy screen isn't a problem)

This is scary. I thought this problem was resolved a while ago.
Egads! We are at the cusp of an iMac refresh and this problem still continues.

They'll never fix this issue let alone admit it even exists. It's alot cheaper to blame the end user than redesign the imac.
