my mac has been giving me the "ouch, my laser" errors and creating coasters for a while now. I am ready to replace the cdrom. where should I order a replacement dvd burner for a 24inch imac?

Its not a "cdrom", in case thats what you are searching for.

Its just a standard 12.7 mm slot loading PATA DVD-RW.

The AL iMacs used Sony Optiarcs, white iMacs used Panasonic/Matsushitas.

getting really hard to find

If you have a AL iMac, going with an external doesnt ad much clutter, it can slip right under the chin on it -- thats how mine is -- I barely notice it.

External drives are 3X faster than any slot loading drive.

$35 for this setup:

My understanding is the slot loaders are slower due to firmware limitations imposed by apple to make them quieter, and if I throw in an aftermarket one, that should not be the case anymore, right?

So a PATA laptop drive will drop in then. Sorry for being stubborn about this, but I hate having anything on my desk.

If its just a standard laptop drive, will any slim slot loader work?

-facepalm-

I forgot about the profile tool. According to that, I'm using the MATSHITADVD-R UJ-875.

I am surprised not everything is sata in this unit though.

okay, I'm going to have to fold and get an external. My question, will my mac be able to power it? I have a powered hub in the back because my elgato tuner starves my mac of current. will a USB powered burner cause a similar dilemma?

Yea, I have an external dvd burner powered only by one usb port. Works great. Mine is the LG slim 80 or something

Get the firewire one I linked to.

Use one 2(FW400 and FW800) ports you arent using on the back of your mac.

this was when I was getting ready to move, so excuse the clutter -- but you can see my external under the right side

oops! good catch. I guess I'll have to think on this. I have to clone some discs tomorrow, so in the mean time, I pulled an old G4 out, tossed in another drive, and that will do for now.

if you already have a drive from a G4 that will work in the $12 case I linked to.

even easier.

you can get one of those USB powered ones -- but you are stuck again with slow speeds and needing a powered USB port.
