I am currently using a 2014 15 inch MacBook Pro 2.2ghz 4 core 16gb ram

Currently my computer seems to perform a little slow with my set up which is 2 external 4K monitors one of them being a Cintiq pro 24. The drawing on the Cintiq can get a slight bit laggy.

I need a laptop that will work well with both monitors and not lag. I don't really want to spend any more than needed but performance is key. I primarily working illustrator and a little photoshop. I am moving into after effects. I really cant have the machine slow down when drawing on the Cintiq. How mush faster are today’s laptops than the ones in 2014?

your thoughts are appreciated...

So that means you either looking at Windows PC on Ryzen or you are ready to pay the price for MBP 16.
Anyway you need dGPU for that work. dGpu is only in the MBP 16.
Performance compared to 2014 doubled, because MBP 16 is now 8 core. Also it's every core is also faster.
So at the end, we have laptops now are 2-3 times more powerful than yours.

Appreciate your help. I don’t see myself moving to windows so I guess 16 mbp it is. Didn’t even know what a dGPU was till you mentioned it. I noticed 2 options for Radeon graphics one with 4gb and one with 8gb. Think I’d see any difference? It’s only $100 so it probably doesn’t matter. I’d probably go with 32 gb ram unless there is compelling argument to go all the way.

You will see big difference by going to 5500m with 8gb if you use it mainly for after effects and video editing. And no difference for gaming between all of the GPUs in MBP 16.
32Gb of RAM is really best spot. You don't need to go further.
