Currently, when I log into iMessage on my iPad or OS X ML, I have the ability to send iMessages from my iCloud email address. However, since I also have an iPhone, I often send my iMessages from my actually phone number (therefore, all threads on friends' iPhones etc are based around contact with my phone number).
What we need for iMessage, is the ability to send messages though the same iCloud account, but with the Message ID being what I am sending from. Otherwise, at this stage, iMessage on my iPad and Macbook is pointless to me, as I don't want to be sending messages from my email address.

Does anyone foresee Apple introducing this ability in the near future? I really hope it comes to see the day as I am excited to be able to message from my Mac and iPad, but at this stage it is useless to me.

Cheers!

They definitely need to do something. I know they like to keep it as simple/easy for users as possible, but when people end up with two conversations with the same contact name in their message list its just confusing.

I think it would be difficult to assign the phone number to all devices. If anything I'd like to move away from the number dependence for iMessage. Make the apple ID or something the primary 'caller id' even from the phone.

Something anyway to keep the conversation in sync across all devices.

This you can do in iMessage settings on your iPhone. It's not a great solution, because its broken the moment someone sends you a message based on your phone number manually, but it does work.
