Need adapter to use old MacBook Pro's SSD

Hi everyone.

My MacBook Pro Late 2012 just died due to battery failure, I'm not thinking of getting a new battery so it's an e-waste now.

But, I have extracted its SSD. I can make good use of it. How can I use it though ? What type of adapter do I need ? M2toUSB ? mSATAtoUSB ? Something else ?

I'm planning to use this SSD on my MacBook Pro Late 2013, as a secondary drive. So i need to plug it through USB port.

Any 2.5" ssd enclosure will do,
i have 3 OWC usb C-A ones that work great!

so the MBP work expect for the battery?
that can be used with a plug only, so that has some use.

Late 2012 was the first 13” retina.

If it's non-retina (with DVD drive on right side), any 2.5" SATA USB3 enclosure will do.

If it's a retina (with the proprietary design Apple OEM SSD), then your choices are FAR more limited.

OWC sells an enclosure that may fit, but the price is STEEP ($75 or more?). See Waff's URL above.
There MIGHT be other solutions available, but you'll have to "hunt" for them.

A question:
How LARGE is the drive?
Unless it's 1tb (or larger), probably not worth the cost of the OWC enclosure...

Good point. I have a 256 GB one from a retina MBP, but I might as well get a whole new SSD for the price of an enclosure at that capacity.

The battery was swollen so i removed it. without the battery the computer got really slow. So it's a total e-waste now..

It's the Retina Late 2012 (A1425). 256 GB Storage. A cheap adapter would really come in handy otherwise imma have to use my computer like a SSD reader lol, i wanna be able to carry the SSD with me without needing the entire laptop

Also when i extracted this ssd, it came inside a little thing which has a cable output with some pins. Someone knows what this output even called so i can search for a converter to convert that pin cable to USB ? I know i sound like a question mark but you get the point i believe.

That is expected. Without battery, system throttles. Dunno how much used OEM non-swollen battery costs, but if you install one, you can resurrect the laptop, even if the charging capacity of the battery is low. No more throttling.

The ribbon cable is part of the SSD tray:

You can easily remove the SSD from that tray, then all you need is the (pricey...) enclosure, like the one listed from OWC. It's needed because Apple decided to use an SSD with an Apple-specific connector.

Yeah i meant the tray. Since the enclosure is expensive, i wondered if i could find a way to plug this weird output to USB using a convertor somehow..

I did some more search. I guess no solution apart from the pricey enclosure. In that case the entire MacBook is e-waste now. Sad to see it like this.

i know that process is a headache and time consuming,

my point is :
i am getting a used great condition (i hope) today aMacbook Air 2010 11{
from ebay that does not have a battery, power chord and ssd drive,
because i purchased all three two years ago for my MBA i had since 2010
then the MBA ceased to work in May.
even the cables are worth a lot to some one out there.
you can save someone's MBP.

The OWC enclosure isn't worth the money.

For about $100, you can get a USB3.1 gen2 1tb SSD, like the Crucial x9.
Something that IS worth spending the money on.

You are damn right. But seeing my SSD being unused like that hurts me. Shall the EU force Apple to use a proper SSD in the future. (Maybe they did i dunno about new macs)

I was thinking of using this SSD with my android phone, it's small I could put it inside my wallet lol. Damn that's sad i just can't do that.

Apple "fixed" that, literally... their answer is soldering the SSD to the logic board.
Now, there is no choice to remove/replace the SSD.
