Need advice about which iMac I should get..

I'm looking into buying a iMac for developing iOS apps. So I'll be running photoshop most of the time to design graphics and animations.

I am waiting a few months before I buy, I'm just researching now..


27-inch iMac with Retina 5K display

• 4.0GHz quad-core Intel Core i7, Turbo Boost up to 4.2GHz
• 16GB 1867MHz DDR3 SDRAM - two 8GB
• 512GB Flash Storage
• AMD Radeon R9 M390 with 2GB video memory

This is what I'm looking at just want some advice on a few things- i7 worth it for what I'll be doing? Or will i5 do me well? 16GB will be overkill?
Is that enough flash storage or should I go for the 1tb? Heard bad things about the fusion drives..

• The i7 will help in rendering animations and if you want to extend the life of your investment.
• The ram you can get cheaper elsewhere and is easy to add some yourself. Apple ram prices are ridiculous.
• Personnaly I would go with a 256Gb SSD and buy an external Thunderbolt raid array for storage, but that just me.
• You definetly want the M395X if you're planning to work on 5K graphics and again to extend the life.
• The rest are as you see fit.

I would spend the money on the R395X and get third-party RAM, as tuxon86 suggests. As for SSD, I had a 256GB on my 2013, 512GB on my 2014 and just bought my 2015 with 1TB because I fill them up with temporary files (and I do have a 16TB Drobo 5D for primary storage).

If you're going to be coding and using Photoshop, then the i7 isn't worth it. Photoshop will take much more advantage of the fastest video card you can get and more RAM. Get 3rd party RAM and install yourself (it's really easy) and you can probably get 32GB for the same price.

That being said, things can change in a few months... who knows what the configurations will be after WWDC in June.
