I'm not sure if this was posted already but here it goes. I have an iphone 2G with a dead strip on the bottom. I can't even slide to unlock it. I've read online that many people had this problem and they resolved it by bringing the iphone to the store and getting a new one for free EVEN if they were out of warranty. The problem is that I did not purchase this phone originally from apple, Ive bought it from a friend. I don't have at&t either. My question is, will I get the phone replaced even if I am not the original owner/don't have at&t? If you have any ideas and suggestion to what to say to the genius guy, that will seem legit, please let me know. Thank you.

You say: "I have an iphone 2G with a dead strip on the bottom. I can't even slide to unlock it. I've read online that many people had this problem and they resolved it by bringing the iphone to the store and getting a new one for free EVEN if they were out of warranty."

They say either "Okay" or "No way - you're out of warranty"

If you don't ask, you have NO chance. (But don't get your hopes up - out of warranty = out of luck)

Yea I figured that too,but I am just looking for tips and ideas to make it more legit and increase the chances of getting it replaced, since Ive never gotten anything serviced/replaced by apple. Thanks for response

In addition, I have nothing that the iphone comes with box, receipt or accessories. Could that create a problem? Do I have to give my name and other info there? I have made an appointment for saturday 12pm. Also the phone might be ~2yrs old or even older. Thanks for help.

I agree with eawmp1, that is your best shot.

You don't need any of that stuff.

When I bought my MacBook, I had to chuck out the box before I drove back across to border from Buffalo, NY to Toronto, Ont. I've brought it in for service a couple of times since.

ok thanks, so I don't need to provide any info like from where I got it from, when was it purchased etc?

^^^^ Is it registered in your name?

The best thing to do is call 1-800-MYAPPLE and tell them that you bought an iPhone from someone and need to have it looked at by the Genius Bar.

No, its not, I have bought it off craigslist today, but I was guessing I shouldnt say that to the genius, so I will use the "I got it from a friend" story. Is calling really neccessary? Ive heard lots of people got theirs replaced without questions, just not sure what to do if you aren't the original owner. I also don't have at&t nor I ever had it.

it doesn't matter. they can just check the serial number of the iPhone and check the warranty, regardless.

because you don't have at&t, i would suggest you restore your iPhone first to original settings. otherwise, they have even more of a reason not to help you.

Yeah I went today, but didn't have an appointment so couldnt talk to the genius. Tho the lady there checked it out and said there's no way they will replace an out of warranty iphone. Still not loosing hope since I didnt see a genius yet.

Wait a sec..... did you buy it as it is? With the dead strip? Did the seller tell you that there is a dead strip?

no, he said that the touch screen sometimes doesn't respond as it should, but I wasnt able to test it and find out that it has a dead strip after I purchased it..

But you were aware when you bought it that there was in issue with the responsiveness of the touch screen.

Since that is (most likely) the case, then no, I don't think that Apple should give you a replacement. Since it is way out of warranty, they won't anyway. I'm sure the price you paid for it reflected the fact that it was faulty.

And since you bought it without trying it first, it's buyer beware. I would never buy something like that without trying it first.

I was under the impression that you bought it, it worked fine, and then it stopped working properly.

Good luck, but no more help from me (I'm not going to help you scam Apple).

Yeah well its my fault for buying a phone with a dead strip. I thought I could fix it by myself but apparently not because I can't slide to unlock it. Don't see how this is scaming apple, since apple got full price for it originally and owners often change but thanks for your help i suppose...
