I just need to know is it better to go with the Apple store replacement plan for $199 due to water damage or file a claim with Squaretrade for the 32 GB iphone?

Obviously if you go in without her water-damaged phone and no available upgrades you're going to pay full price.
With Squaretrade's payout, you're not going to have enough to buy a new 32GB 3GS so you might as well take hers and and pay the $199 replacement fee.

You can't. You have to send the phone in to ST to get that money. Apple isn't going to let you just walk in and buy a phone for $199. You have to turn in the broken one to get that price.
Ok, I get it now! Well, it'd probably make more sense to go the Square trade route then, right? I'm sure the copay or whatever it's called couldn't possibly be $199, so it'd have to be cheaper. Plus that's what you paid ST for!
The problem with that is Squaretrade only covers the cost of the subsidized phone unless you have proof (receipt) that you paid the full cost of the phone. Obviously that's not going to be enough to cover the cost of a non-subsidized replacement which is what you're going to get if you go to Apple without the water-damaged phone.
Okay, that's what I was thinking would happen. I guess the Squaretrade plan makes more sense to use after the 1st year where you can probably buy the 32 GB iphone on eBay for less than the unsubsidized price.
