Need apple to respond to the marketplace

I have a 2009 aging desktop (the old big box 2.66Ghz Intel xeon 4,1) which is the main workhorse for my browsing, logic audio usage, and just about everything else - and have been waiting YEARS for apple to come up with a rational replacement.

I need and want a REAL desktop - with multiple hard drive bays (rules out the mac mini or the canister-shaped device pretending to be a computer ) as I have 4 internal HDs, with USB ports galore for my connections to my audio interface, etc., and do not need another screen (rules out the pointless iMac). I also am not impressed with the paltry 256/512 GB flash drive that comes with the current canister macs, which is puny and drives a need for additional drives, which then need to be connected via more cables, taking up more desk space.

I have a choice of buying a pc to handle everything BUT logic, but then I'll need two desktops which is idiocy.

I have also questioned apple store reps repeatedly, asking them when is apple going to add a real desktop to their lineup, and all I get is shrugs.

The current unit I have is beginning to break down, so my decision is being forced to where I might have to walk away from apple products entirely as I'd have to buy cubase to work on a pc.

There HAS to be a big enough demand of the public for a real, upgradeable, traditional desktop pc - not everyone wants to surf the web on their 3 inch iphone or 7 inch ipad. What is keeping apple from producing a real desktop computer?

Vote with your wallet. If it's such a big issue for you, maybe it's time you learned another DAW and switched to Windows.

You've got some room to improve your existing box with a CPU upgrade. Possibly memory too, if that's your bottleneck.

I'm a bit wary of upgrades for your computer though, since you say it is breaking down. Not sure what that means.

On the same boat here. Have a MacPro5,1 with 2*2.93GHz 6-core + 96GB RAM + GTX980 + 0.5TB PCIe SSD. The machine starts to show its age. Slower than an old iMac on quite a few tasks. Less responsive on clicks, which sometimes drive me nuts. No TB2, so I spent some significant money to put a 10GbE network card to connect to my NAS. The 12 cores can still do some heavy lifting, especially when I run multiple parallel calculations, but it's getting old in many ways. I really want to retire it or use it as a computation-only server and get a faster desktop, but I can't. There is no legitimate offer from Apple at this moment. Hack, even the iMac has been almost 500 days without an update.

Apple really needs to put itself together.

Unfortunately, you aren't the market. "The market" consists of kids whose lives take place on cell phones and who might need something similar to a chrome-book (aka "Macbook Pro") for school. As long as we're talking about mass consumption, that's "the market." Apple knows this, sadly.

Pro tip: If you have to abandon the Mac, and if you are at all technically adept, look into a Linux distribution rather than Windows.

Bad news - I don't think here will be any real Apple desktop in short future. That's just my guess, but really can't see any sign of it.

Good news - there are lots of room for your 4,1 to upgrade, which may allow to use it for few more years.

I also bought the single 2.66GHz processor 4,1 from Apple back in 2009.
And now still running it but with the 3.46GHz Hex core CPU and dual 7950 etc (as per my signature). Of course it still far from the best by considering what kind of hardware you can get in a Windows PC / workstation. But sure this config still works well with the current macOS (10.12.3) and software (FCPX, Photoshop, etc). Reasonably fast and responsive.

If you don't need anything more than Quad core CPU. flash your 4,1 to 5,1, install a single X5677, upgrade the boot drive to an SSD, add some RAM if required. Then you will feel your 4,1 like a new machine.

P.S. Hackintosh is another way to achieve what you need with just a single computer. You may consider that path as well.

Whilst I'm pretty despondant about what's been happening with Apple in the last couple of years, I'm cautiously optimistic that the Mac Pro will see another revision eventually. I still can't understand understand why they never even bothered with incremental updates to the 6,1 in the meantime.

It's not all bad. Buy hardware that's well supported, and you can pretty much build the Mac Pro of your dreams and it'll cost 1/2 of what it would cost if you were buying it from Apple.
