Need audio advice

I'm on the verge of purchasing a Macbook Pro. Also, my home theater has to go (dead). Is there a knowledgable soul that can help me with audio & Apple.

I understand the part about Apple TV; the movie playing via Itunes will be captures by Apple TV (wifi) & the movie will be shown on my tv. Since the Apple TV is connected using HDMI, is the sound also transfered by Apple TV?

What about when Youtube plays on your MacBook Pro (or any other software with sound)...if you want superior sound (digital), what do you recommend besides using the line-out of the computer.

sound is not really "captured by the appleTV"
a new button will appear in itunes, with that you can select the output for where itunes plays.
Audio and video will be transferred. or just audio (plus album artwork and track info) if you're playing music, and if playing music, you can output to multiple locations at once in sync with each other, so any combination of the built-in computer speakers, AppleTVs, or any other airplay enabled devices

you can also connect to iTunes from the AppleTV, and browse your entire library using the remote, and the menus on your TV.

The AppleTV also has an optical digital audio out, so if you have a stereo receiver with the appropriate input, you can use that also.

if you want to play something that's not in your iTunes library from your laptop to the appleTV you'll have to look at a third party application like airfoil or airflick.

as to the question about digital audio...
the audio out jack on all recent macs (for at least 5 or more years) is also an optical out, you need a mini-toslink cable to plug into it, but those are easy to find.

Agree with waw74. That's the way it is. Now, you can have your ATV 2 connected to your TV with HDMI, and also to an Amplifier via the Optical (SPDIF) Port.

In the past I have connected my MBP to my amplifier via the Optical Output. The advantage of the optical connector over the analog audio connector is that it avoids any interference that may come from the MBP.
