I have the 9.7 Pro with Apple silicone back and Apple keyboard. I find I don’t use the keyboard so want to remove it amd just have a silicone smart front cover instead. I am not keen on paying the crazy Apple prices. Does anyone know of a make of really good and sensibly priced front covers?

Some of the Targets have been stocking them. If you find one, you could price match from Amazon. They normally will not mark it down, if it just came into the store even though it has been discontinued by Apple. A few months ago I saw a 4th Gen iPad cover. It was $30 which was still too high for me.

I am in Europe, here Apple smart covers are €54. I saw some copies for IPP 10.5 which looked identical for €15. Couldn’t find any for the earlier Pro though.i was unable to find a make on the copy to source the right size.
I didn't see any third party smart covers for any of the Pro iPad. I went looking for one for my 10.5 Pro and couldn't find any either. eBay might be your best ...there is a thread someone saying that the 9.7 and 9.7 pro aren't the same. I got a iPad 9.7 pro case for my moms iPad 9.7 and it fit. I'm guessing the issue if you get a iPad 9.7 is the sleep/awake feature.
