Before I got my iMac, I had a PC and used Picasa to download my iPhone pictures. Picasa would automatically put them into a dated folder, and erase the files from my iPhone.

On my iMac, the Photos process automatically goes to iCloud, and syncs back to my iMac and my iPhone. I have two problems with this:
1) I now have 5000+ pictures on my iPhone. What's the best way to delete these?
2) The pictures and videos take a long time to sync. Sometimes a whole day. Even if I plug my phone into the mac, it doesn't sense that the pictures are directly connected, and just go through the wire. So I have to wait for iCloud to sync before I can manipulate and share the pics.

Any suggestions to manually syncing and deleting pictures directly from my iPhone to my iMac?

I have four external drives full of RAW still images and HD video and would never consider syncing to iCloud. It would take years! Why not disable iCloud in Photos preferences and store the images directly on your Mac?

I took it a step further and disabled Photos in Terminal since I use Adobe products and having Photos open every time I inserted a SD/CF card was a PITA. This article explains how to disable Photos autoload if anybody is interested:

Hmm... I never got an alert from your reply. Glad I happened to look. Must be an outlook.com issue.

Anyway, I like having iCloud on so I can see all of the pictures from my families iPhones. It's a nice to have, but I guess I could do it manually too.

But my question is, what can I use to automatically download pictures into folders of their date taken, and delete them from the iPhone? Is there something equivalent to Picasa that can do this on the Mac?

Yeah, tried it. Crashed a lot.

So, is there anything else that would do the trick?

i stay away from icloud for my pics for a couple of reasons, ive too many for the free space, and i also do have a camera as well.

i also dont use photo as i always seem to end up with too much space taken up by it plus a separate backup of pics.

i have a folder on my external drive, with all my pics in it, separated by folder by event. the folder is automatically uploaded onto flickr which i chose for its 2tb space and good ipad app.

every once in a while i plug my iphone into my mac, use image capture to lob my pics into a folder on the external drive, and delete all. then i quickly sort out the pics into folders and move into my pics folder. flickr then gets them in the right folders. similarly when i take my camera, mainly on holiday, i copy the pics from that into a folder, sort, then into my pics folder.
