Hi,

I'm new to this forum and now am starting to think about switching to a mac (I've been a hardcore PC user since 6 years....since I came across the mac!!)

I need some help deciding which one of the following 2 used ibooks to buy:

1. G3 466 Mhz ibook SE graphite
320 MB RAM
10 GB HD
OS 10.4 Tiger
12" screen
DVD Optical Drive

2. G3 500 Mhz ibook
320 MB RAM
10 GB HD
OS 10.4 Tiger
12" screen
CD- ROM Drive

I'm confused: the first one has a DVD drive but has a slower processor while the second one has a faster processor but only a CD-ROM drive! (Though it kinda doesnt mean that much to me - I have a DVD rewriter in my PC)

The first one is for $246, and the second one for $268.

I kinda tilt towards the first one due to DVD drive and lower price, but seriously I just don't like the looks of the graphite.

What do you experienced Mac people say: is a difference of 34 Mhz too much for Macs?

Which one would you suggest me to buy? Another thing to note is that I will just use it for some web and school work, and will sell it next year to buy a brand new macbook for university!!

Any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks
Gaurav

My God, I think my little gerbil in his rolling hollow sphere generates more power than those machines. If you're going to get a Mac, at least spend $500 for one that can power OS X.

I know guys I would have loved to buy a more powerful ibook, but sometimes, you can't. And for now, I have to choose from all (these 2) or nothing. And I guess it would still be wiser to get one rather than not.

So what do you think which is the better one out of these 2? On another note, do you think they would really be that slow (despite RAM slightly higher than recommended) and make me hate a Mac or something for its sluggishness?

I think you should go for the ibook dual usb (the white one). You really don't have a need for dvd right now and if you ever get the guts to install one yourself you can do it via www.ifixit.com.

To be honest a lot of times you can get bored of a computer just because it doesn't look right (yea, im computer shallow haha). Also, the dual usb has a higher resolution which will be a lot better on your eyes.

I'd also go for the 500MHz one. It has a screen with a higher resolution, which should make it a lot nicer to work with.
