Hi all, I need help with my 2017 A1708 MacBook Pro. It's stuck on the Apple logo without a progress bar. The laptop booted to the desktop when I tested it after a DIY battery replacement. But somewhere between that and screwing back the backplate things seem to have gone wrong. And it won't go past the Apple logo. I've tried safe mode, recovery options, diagnostics, and resets like SMAC/NVRAM, but nothing has worked - the same Apple logo shows up every time.

I reopened the backplate to check inside for any loose connections or broken pins. I also reinserted the small data cable above the battery/trackpad and ensured it was properly secured and taped back. I hear the fans running but there's no chime and no progress bar on the screen.

Any suggestions on what else I can try to fix it myself?

Thanks.

Have you tried booting to an external USB installer? (Or any external seive that has a bootable system installed, maybe a backup for your MBPro?)

Is this the same MBPro that you had boot issues 3 years ago?

I suspect it's related to same issue, likely the storage. Logic board is the fix, as the drive is soldered...

No I haven’t tried it since I don’t have any external backups. Everything is already backed up to the cloud so I am not worried about reinstalling the OS completely. Yes it's the same issue but I got a complete OS reinstall and the issue didn't resurface until this battery replacement was done today.

I’m going through the exact same ordeal, but I haven’t done anything physical with my Mac Pro 7,1. Tried all recipes just as you, and nothing worked so far. Turn the computer on, Apple logo with no progress bar appears, and nothing happens. Can’t even access boot options to reinstall the OS with a bootable USB. No other key combinations work either - recovery mode (local or internet), safe mode, reset PRAM / NVRAM, SMC reset… I just can’t fathom it.

@szrtk - A mac repair shop ran the free diagnostics, and said the issue is with the trackpad or keyboard and will take $600 to replace. I replaced both myself, but it still wouldn't work. I am very disappointed with this MacBook. My last two MacBooks were much higher quality. This one has been in and out of repairs for as long as I've had it. I have finally moved to a windows laptop after 15 years. It took me a week to get used to the new interface but it's a much better value/$ spent.

Dunno where you're at with this, but if it were me.... I'd look up how to create a macos installer for a USB drive -- then remove the built in SSD -- then see if you can get it to do SOMETHING from the USB stick. That should at the very least get you to disk utility and whatnot.

If you get that far.... reinstall the SSD, and try again to boot from the USB stick. Then use disk utility to wipe the drive, and reinstall MacOS.

That's gonna push you in a different direction...and should yield some more information to go off of. You shouldn't need to spend $600 for a freaking trackpad, they're trying to take advantage of you.
