Even tho I select a "Ringtone' rather than an "Alert' tone to notify me that an email has been pushed to me, all that plays is a 1 second Alert tone. I am using the Gmail App (not the native iphone 'Mail' App as it can't receive pushes from Gmail) which successfully 'pushes' email notifications to the phone.

This is not good enough as this needs to work on a Hotline, and emails need to be responded to immediately.Missing a little chirp sound is way too easy to do on the road or walking around in a busy area (or even at a relatively quiet place).

Anyone have any good ideas about how to get a long playing tune or tone or ringtone working for an email?

I tried to test it out, but there is no way to change the default tone for the Gmail app. I checked the settings of both the app and notification center.

I was able to set the default mail app to use a 'ringtone' that played longer than one second or one sound, but it was not as quick to come through (like you said no 'push' with default mail app). If I remember right they took away the option to set Gmail up as Exchange....so from the sounds of it there is no option for your situation.
 
One option that you could try is the Outlook app. I know you can change the default sound for incoming emails. I unfortunately can't test that app as I am running iOS9 beta 3 and notifications are not working with Outlook at the moment.

I do know that is pulls or emails are pushed to it very quickly. Might be worth a shot and it's a free app.
 
OK, for the record, here are my conclusions for our service and its varied hardware:

Issues: Email Push, Immediate Notifications, long Ringtone Alerts

· does the email service ‘Push’ notifications (Yes for Gmail APP, Outlook, ICloud, but No to native Gmail on iPhone)

· does the operators phone (App or OS) offer push or merely timed ‘pulls’? (Yes to a iPhone with iCloud, but no to iCloud on a Windows Phone (WP8.1 ))

· does the phone allow long playing Ringtones rather than 1 second ‘’Alerts’? (yes on WP8, but with Gmail App- no to an iPhone)

· does it ‘push’ emails immediately or take 10 minutes? (is the delay the phone’s fault or the email servers fault? I don’t know!) (Yes from Outlook to a WP8 phone, but no from Outlook to a iPhone)


Conclusions:



· IPhone phones should use the iCloud acct

· WP8 phones should use the Outlook acct

· Android phones, I haven’t tested, but the Gmail App should certainly work

First, you should get a domain name from Godaddy or some such place. Then you can go with a Google Apps account if you're a fan of the Google ecosystem. Alternately, a hosted Exchange service (there are many) would fit the bill. I think that if you sign up with Office 365 (for email only) you actually don't have to get a domain, but if you don't you'd have to use their "@youraccount.onmicrosoft.com" email address domain.

I've been recommending hosted Exchange over Google Apps to most users but the recommendation is always based on the customer needs.
 
Microsoft's Outlook free (web) email service supports ActiveSync and works well with push for most people it would seem. It can be used with Apple's own iOS Mail app with push, or with Microsoft's iOS Outlook app with push, or various other third party mail apps in iOS.

True but the "Push' is not immediate, in my experience. It usually takes about 10 minutes to our iPhone, yet is immediate to our Windows Phone! Just as the iCloud service works = immediately to an iPhone, but 10 minutes or so to a Windows Phone.

Odd, it's been immediate in my experience and in that of various other people that I've come across in different threads related to push email services in the past.

Could it be different phones? In this case I was using an iphone4 to connect to the Outlook.com acct.
