Need Help finding a Laptop/Book Bag

I'm starting law school in august and am planning to buy the new MacBook (ibook). I have a pink Timbuk2 laptop "marina" bag that is a little too legally blonde and won't have room for books... does anyone have any suggestions for bags big enough to carry a mac and a ton of books? any rolling bags (corny as that is.. grrr)..?

worth a try!
 
check out timbuk2's commuter - they come in solid colors this year so you can get a great bag *and* look like a professional:rolleyes:
 
just curious - where are you going to law school?

oh, and don't go the rolling bag route! A bunch of people at my law school do it, and they look like such tools... :rolleyes:
 
I second the "no rolling bag".

It fits less stuff than a normal bag, the wheels make the bag weigh more and function rather crappily, AND you look like a tool with one, like the above poster said.

I've been looking at one of those for my iBook. How much extra room is in there after you put your laptop in?
 
Backpacks

I have liked back packs for my bags. Working on getting a motorcycle so I got the axio Swift

I also got an incase neoprene sleeve for when you dont want it in a big bag. You can then throw it in any ordinary bag.

i'm going to GMU out here in Arlington... I know the rolling bags are really lame, i couldn't agree more.. but I had surgery on my spine a year ago and still go to PT twice a week... I've been told the amount of books I'm expected to carry (in addition to a computer) is pretty insane, so it was just a thought...

do people usually use one bag for computer and books or is there a way to use two? i have the timbuk2 marina already for the laptop and guess i could use a standard backpack for books.. but is that too many bags?

hmm.. well.. pretty nice for a guy... but i dont think it works for a girl... (why am i so picky?)
 
If I were you, I'd get a tucano second skin for your laptop and just put it in a record bag. Lots of room for books, and a well protected laptop.

what is a record bag? sorry.. i dont know much about these things.. timbuk2 is the only bag i knew was made for mac....

this is probably just what we call them over here, what i mean is just your bog standard shoulder bag, thats what I use. AS long as you have some sort of case for the laptop, you can just bung it in with your books. Its easy, and people don't know that your carrying a laptop, so its less of a 'mug me' label

Gobs. There's a separate padded slot that takes up to a 15" and probably another 4" worth of thickness, plus the bottle holders on the outside, plus the great pockets under the flap.... It's a great rig!
 
If you're looking for something a bit more stylish than usual, you might want to pop over to Kolobags. I saw it while looking through a corporate discount site we have where I work. The only discount for that site for us is free shipping, with the code 'perk06' which would likely work for anyone.

I'm a bit too much of a straight guy to want one of their bags, but they seem stylish and functional (or rather, they sell from stylish and functional manufacturers, as I don't think they make their own).

I think you can look good without looking too "Reese", and there's no reason to get some big black bag just to fit in.

I'm wondering whether or not there will be new bags for the new MacBooks... Do case manufacturers usually come out with new things when there are new sized products?

Most or all of the makers who manufacture "snug-fit" cases have already or will soon come out with MB Pro-sized versions. FYI, most cases that fit the 15" PB fit the MBP, but most sleeves don't - the MBP is just enough bigger that it either doesn't fit or needs to be crammed it (never good for a $2K+ item!).

Edit: I forgot you were going to get a MacBook (non-Pro). Word is that the form factor will be very different (13" widescreen) than the current iBooks, so you'll definitely want to wait for new cases, or else get one which fits a 15" and then get a snug sleeve with the MacBook.

Which size bag is this? They come in small, medium, large and extra large... And do they have a protective slot for the laptop or is it just a bookbag? it's a little masculine looking, even with black and pink :-/

the ones from the Kolo website were really feminine but dont look like they'll hold books and a computer. Do people usually carry everything in ONE bag or do they have 2? I've never used a computer for school before....

Pretty much anything that isn't labelled a sleeve will hold at least a book or two. Almost all sites show dimensions - you should be able to determine from that how much it'll hold.

If your back is really that bad, and you don't want something with wheels, you might want to look into a supplier of real backpacks - ones with a real frame (hidden or external) and true lower back support. Get one that looks decent (they exist!) and a protective sleeve for your Mac, and you should be good to go.

get a tucano second skin. i have the 15 inch powerbook edition, but keep my macbook in it. then just toss your computer in a normal backpack w/ your books.

i actually never knew there was such a thing... i m just hoping to avoid having to carry something huge and lame looking.. maybe they'll come out with new bags for the new MacBooks? I hope so...
