Greetings all,

I am a new mac user (very exp. PC user) and just received my new G4 ibook today. My problem is this:

When I download and try to install a program (have tried with mozilla, msn, etc.) I always receive a "Mount Failed" error and an error code 536870208

This ibook is literally right out of the box. I haven't done anything but walk throgh the initial setup. I have not messed with any system configurations or anything of that nature.

Any ideas? Thanks in advance.

whats the file or can you hint at its type. Its possible wherever your gettign it from posted a bad .dmg file otherwise if its an application try googline the developers site and downloading it from a different link, in general the browser which your downloading from doesn't matter...

msn isn't a browser either

Sorry, when I mentioned mozilla, msn, etc. those are the applications I was trying to install. I have tried both IE and Safari to download. Thanks for the help.

oh ok, im not sure what the problem is then, its very strange sorry I can't be more help

I believe this is a known problem with 10.3 and the new iBook G4s (for example, there's at least one thread in Apple's forums about it).

Unfortunately, I'm not quite sure how to fix it, although it can be worked around. Possible suggestions: Reinstall the OS from the disks that came with your iBook, download the 10.3.1 update from Apple's site (not the automatically downloaded Software Update version) and install that, or it might require waiting for 10.3.2 to fix, in which case it'll probably be a week or two.

Sorry about your bum experience, but good luck.

My brother just bought an iBook yesterday. He is a brand new Mac user. He told the genius that he always reinstalled windows to customize and remove all the unnecessary software that came with it.

The genius told him the same thing..to reinstall the OS when he got home. After my bro asked several questions why, it seemed he really didn't want to answer and just said that is what I always do.

I've also read a few threads where people do this whenever they get a new machine, guess some of the geniuses do as well.

Try to re-download the file(s).
Or maybe a restart? And then try it.
