iPod NEED HELP IPOD DOCK !!!!!

Maybe. Did the iPod come with an AC adaptor?
If not you can buy one from Apple (not overly expensive) and use that to charge your iPod.

Hrrmmm, mine shows charging when I use the USB plug. I think it doesn't charge when my iBook is in sleep mode, but the firewire will.

Firewire won't always transfer power. Four-pin Firewire certainly doesn't transmit any power. Some laptop PCI cards that have 6-pin Firewire inputs don't transmit any power either; in that case, the PCI card usually has an AC adapter input (very strange looking for a PCI card, but nonetheless) that would then power the Firewire cable.
Six-pin Firewire on Macs always transfer the standard seven watts of power. Almost all USB2 ports, on any type of machine, now supply enough voltage to charge their input devices.

Okay:
#1 Waht version of iPod do you have? Is it the 3rd Gen with the buttons above the wheel, or is it a click-wheel version?
if your answer is 3rd Gen, you need a compatible 3rd Gen dock. The pin configuration on the dock and 3rd Gen iPod are different from current docks and iPods. I won't bother askign if you have a mini-dock cos the bigger ipods will not even fit those.
#2 Do you have USB 2.0 on your computer?
if you have USB 1.x the iPod will not charge as only USB 2.0 will carry a charge.
#3 Did you receive the AC power adapter with the ipod. There are two versions of this, the Power Adapter (which uses firewire) or the USB Power Adapter (which, well, uses USB 2.0 cables)

Are you on a PC or a Mac?
PC don't charge over the cables once plugged in. At least Firewire and USB1 doesn't... no sure about USB2.
If you are on a PC try charging your iPod with the Powerbrick then syncing with iTunes...
