Well according to this (http://nikonrumors.com/forum/topic.php?id=172) the flat spot is normal. It's exactly centered on the bottom of the lens and is there as to prevent rolling when the lens is set down.

I would recommend to ask the seller if they will include a copy of the purchase recipt showing it was bought from an authorized dealer. The 5 year warranty on nikon usa lenses is transferrable but you do need to provide a copy of the original recipt in order to claim on it. In my experience this is something that a lot of buyers of "LNIB" items don't realize.
