Need Help on Buying Decision...

Okay, here's the deal. I bought a 1.5 ghz, 15.2 Superdrive Powerbook in the end of June. It died(moment of silence)... Ahem, sniff, sniff. The store I bought it from has very generously refunded my money. I've spent the last 3 years working 24/7 on the last G3 iBook 900mhz, 40 gig HD, yadayadayada. I figure for the amount I spent on the PB I can

A)Go back and buy another PB
OR
B)Get a 1.8 17" iMac w/Superdrive AND a 1.2 12" iBook. (refurb on both)

I need a portable - I teach and everything I do comes off of the laptop. My district went windows (we got a boatload of money from some kind of settlement AND our head tech guy was more comfortable w/ Windows.) But I do quite a bit of Photo work and having the G5 would be nice and it's easy enough to work on one and transfer said work to the other.

What does the Gallery think?

iMac and iBook almost every time. I've got that set up and I find it much better having a powerful desktop and a laptop compared to a slightly powerful laptop and that's all.

Why I need a Mac?

Doesn't everyone need a Mac?
Seriously, I've been using mac for 20+ years. For example: I bought office 2004, and it works much better than the windows version. I get more done on a mac. When I give Keynote presentations to my peers and the students, IT always works seamlessly. The honest truth is that I'm an asthetic snob... Look, feel, quality, useabilty are very important.

Your plan is reasonably sound, but I would get the newest Rev C iMacG5
that was just released last week.
Education price $1199 and worth every penny in updates.
You can then still get an iBook new or refurbed for on the go.

The original 1.8 GHz Rev A iMac G5's had a serious problem with the mid plane board capacitors failing after about 6 months.
Apple may have solved the problem in the Rev B's but that's still up in the air, especially when they just now released an all new iMac with a competely different logic board as well as other major improvements.

In either even, I would wait till after tomorrow to see what Apple is up to.

I definitely planned to see what came out of the sleeve Steve Jobs black turtleneck tomorrow. Fortunately it's on the East Coast, so we don't have to wait all day to find out!!
As for the 1.8, I'm assuming since it comes with the full one year warranty, that any problems I find, will show up within that year and Apple will fix it with a smile on their faces...

I'm a little nervous about "refurbs." I had to have my powerbook repaired 4 times so far, and it was brand-new.

It works now. After a year of periodic part replacements. (Screen twice, hardrive once, video ram, motherboard)

Or then again, maybe a refurb already has the bugs worked out?

Personally, those new iMacs look awesome. If I didn't need portability, they seems like a wonderful value.
