Need Help!! Please Help (folder sign and a question mark)

can some one tell me whats wrong with my mac. when i cut it on it just have a folder sign and a question mark but it suppose to have a apple sign and it doesnt so can you please help me

Your machine cannot find an operating system. You either need to get the restore disks, or if you cannot find them, contact Apple and get a new set. Alternatively, you could just go and buy a copy of OS X and iLife if you like and get the same effect.

^^ Also seconded. But there's probably a reason it can't find the operating system. May be a dead hard drive... (hope you backed your data up, OP)
