Hello everyone i have just bought a new imac,and i wanted to know if i could talk to my family, they have windows messenger on there windows vista, and i will have ichat and other ones mac do. Any help would be great thanks.

Easiest solution would be to use www.meebo.com
Second best solution would be to download Adium http://www.adiumx.com/
Best solution would be to use a phone and call your family!

Welcome to the exclusive club!!!!

You have two options IMO. Microsoft do produce their own client (Messenger for mac), but it is limited in functionality (no webcam support for example), but for basic talking to people it works. This would be a good transition from the Windows Live client you've probably been used to.

Adium (www.adiumx.com) is a nice little open source client built specially for the Mac that uses the MSN protocol (amongst others). Still no webcam support.

aMSN, another open source client, has a horrible interface (at least it did anyway) as it's cross platform but offers webcam support (so function over form really).

Sorry for the burden of choice!
