I have a mid-2010 mbp which is running on the Sierra software, kernel panics are happening everyday, and I want to find a solution as the laptop is still in great condition and cannot afford to buy a newer version. Should I go back to an older software? please help!

Hi Audit13...

I admire your software and hybrid insight. This same issue happened to me on my Retina, 15", early 2013 MacBook Pro back in 2018. After using the patch to allow time machine back up the computer, wiping the system, and reinstalling MacOS with no luck, I got a new motherboard and bought myself 4 good years until now, the GPU panics have returned. My computer only runs in safe mode. I'm backing up my computer again now and will wipe it again. I'm interested to ask, do you know if the capacitor issue is the same on this model? I'd love to just replace a capacitor instead of replacing my whole motherboard. I imagine it's a SMD which will be challenging, but perhaps I could take it to someone with the proper tools if so.

Hope to hear back soon...

Best,
Chris

Hi,

The mid-2010 15" uses a GT330m while the early 2013 uses a GT650m.

Based on what I've read in the past, the panics in the 2013 are caused by a bad GPU rather than a single capacitor.

That jars my memory. I think you’re right and I bet both of these must be onboard the motherboard. I probably thought about taking off the GPU and deemed the risk of a SMD chip replacement going bad “too risky,” for my set of tools and replaced the entire motherboard.

Thanks for the reply.
