I have a gmail email address that I have been using for years to purchase from iTunes. I am planning on using that to set up with iCloud. Now from what I understand, it's going to force me to create a me.com address when I do that.

Now would this new me.com address be somehow associated with the gmail Apple ID? And if so, can it be disassociated with my gmail Apple ID at some point in the future and changed to a different me.com address?

And is the newly created me.com address an Apple ID itself as well?

No. iTunes in the cloud is associated with your iTunes music store account ID.. it will be charged to you as an iTunes purchase and you will use your existing iTunes ID to access your music...

Yup, what he said.

Your current AppleID will be used. It will be "activated" as an iCloud account that will be able to store everything but mail and notes. These are only for @me accounts. You don't need to create a @me account unless you want to.

Ok I understand the whole iTunes thing but I'm still unclear about the email thing. Isn't there an email setting under the primary iCloud account which would be my gmail apple ID?

I guess I just don't understand why there would be an on/off setting for Mail under it if there is no connection whatsoever to the me.com email address.

It's not hard to understand. If you already have an email address Apple uses that. If you don't (or you want a new one), they give you a me.com.

Ok I get that but will that new me.com then be permanently associated with my gmail Apple ID (the primary iCloud account) or is it something I can change later?

Anyone know the answer to this question?
