New MBP waiting for me at home, and want to get cookin with file transfering as soon as possible. My first mac.
Two questions:
1) How do I transfer files over my wireless network between my PC and new MBP( mp3s, word files, etc )?

2) How do I burn .dmg images?

actauly make it three questions

3) Any really good beginner guides to OS X?

1) Option 1: Make sure you have folders shared on your winpc. Then on the mac go to "Network" in Finder. You should be able to see your winpc there. If not, make sure Windows Sharing is set to "on" in System Prefs under Sharing. Option 2. Under Sharing click Windows Sharing, note down your address and add a network place on your PC using that address. Then in both cases its just a matter of dragging and dropping.

2) Try Disk Utility under Applications -> Utilities

3) Yes, but I don't know any specifics! Sorry!

Transferring files over your wireless network will probably take a long time, as it usually isn't as fast as internet connections. But either way to do it you will use the Finder's Go menu, and open your network. You should have your PC setup to share the folder(s) and files, and you should be able to drag and drop from there.

Burning .dmg's will require Disk Utility (Applications>Utilities folder). And drag the .dmg, or open the .dmg with that program, and it will burn a CD as that .dmg file.

Beginner's guide to OS X? These forums I'd say, I just recommend messing around. There are guides on this site too.

It's not as fast as an internet connection, it's much, much faster. Still, it will take a long time to copy, depending on how much is being copied.

Quick way to get up and running is to enable Windows sharing on the Mac, make sure you have shared your PC drive, and change your PC workgroup to something customized, like (abc123). On the Mac, go to Applications > Utilities and click on Directory Access. Change your MBP's workgroup to the same. The PC might ask to be rebooted. Do that, and then it should show up in your network in Finder. This isn't a necessary step, but it does increase the odds of an easy setup.

to network your pc and mac, do the following:

in finder, go to "Go"
then "Connect to server"
in the server address, type in "smb://your pc's ip address/sharename"
then click "connect"

if you have a password on your username on your pc, you'll have to type it in, as well as your user name.

Good luck
