Need Help.To hack or not to hack. will apple ever allow 3rd party apps?

Tomorrow i plan to get an iphone through At&t(yes i will use their service). After registering and everything, i was thinking about jailbreaking so that i can put applications on it. Heres the thing.. should i risk doing this? How exactly does bricking work anyway? when apple releases updates, the updates will brick your phone if it finds it? Say i use the version of app tapp/installer.app on the current version, the next time apple releases an update i will have to wait until there is a new version of app tapp, download it, THEN download the itunes? If i do it that way will it prevent me from bricking? BASICALLY, i want to know how to install apps WITHOUT ANY POSSIBILITY OF ME BRICKING THE iphone. I am still thinking of waiting till MARCH 6 if apple decides to let people use 3rd party apps(yeah right). What should i do? i really need help and opinions.
 
Wait a week and see what the "iPhone roadmap" reveals.

It's very likely that Apple will allow 3rd party apps in one form or another.
 
Well, it's less than a week to find out.

I think a new iPhone and a myriad of web apps would keep ya busy for a few days. :)
 
Be patient. Wait for apple to do it for you. At least you have an iPhone to play with. We canadians don't even have the friggin iPhone, and ireland is going to get it. IRELAND! we're just across the border too.


enough complaining. yea just wait it out, it won't be long.
 
i get what your saying to wait it out, and i will, but what exactly is going to happen on that day. what will they do with those third party apps? will they finally let us do what we want with the phone. All i want is to leisurely put applications i want on it. any speculations of whats going to happen on the 6? THE END OF BRICKING?!?!?;)

Naturally, we aren't sure what Apple is going to announce/release; the best we can do is guess. Definitely wait until the 6th because this will surely answer every question you've asked so far. In the meantime, keep checking the front page for stories regarding SDK rumors.

i thought using any of those are liable to bricking?

anyways i will wait till the sixth. the comment about only being limited by your imaginations encourages me to believe they might allow us to use those apps.

the confusing part is there are also both reliable sources that says different things: apple being like a gatekeeper, and then the other comment from Electronista is also liable.

im a little confused about what Electronista is saying thought. can i have a summery?

yea. ZiPhone is pretty fool proof. and if anything were to go wrong, its nothing that a simple restore cant fix. but if youre that paranoid just wait it out. the official apple apps and web apps can hold you over for a week.
 
so, it is possible that apple could allow you to hack your phone to install aps on march 6?
 
now im even more confused. lets get this straight. If i use at t and continue to use it, and all i want to do is hack to install apps, is that liable to bricking?

If it ends up failing, it's nothing that a simple restore can't fix.

Now, if you were unlocked on another carrier.... well then you'd have a problem, as that can cause all sorts of problems with the bootloader and stuffs.

I'm on 1.1.4 and jailbroke in 45 seconds. No worries here at all.

I wasn't going to jailbreak... but after today's possible news... I had to JB it, lol. If I don't like it after a while... I can just restore the iPhone.
 
i think ill still wait till march 6, but what program do i use to just install apps (reminder-i use At&t) in which there is absolutely ANY chance of freezing/or bricking. i want to have a few replies to be 100% sure. im not taking the chance of having it bricked, because i don't have the money to just go and buy a new one.
 
I just jailbroke my iPhone last week with the installer.app (I think it's that one that has the summerboard and installer, etc) will I be able to do a restore to the factory settings without my iPhone bricking?
 
so, is there any possible damage or problems with jailbreaking that a restore cant fix?
