My ati radeon 6870 was working well in my mac pro 2008. I decided with everything working smoothly in both OS X ML 10.8.2 and in Win 7, to go ahead and use cindori's 6870 package to get the dvdplayer working in OSX.

I made the mistake of installing the ATIgraphicsupdate rather than just installing the ATY_init.Kext file. Now the graphics card does not work with OS-X at all. It still works fine in windows 7, but it is simply black when i attempt to use OS-X. Its not just the bootscreen, but the login screen is black as well. The only thing that works is the disk utility screen from cmd +R.

I'm not sure what to do. I did a restore install of mountain lion from the recovery partition, but it did not solve the issue. I'm now going to do a clean install.

If anyone knows how i can resolve this, please let me know.

Dude, that sounds like a sticky situation.

ATI Radeon 6870 package
Here is all you need to get ATI Radeon 6870 working on your Mac Pro or Hackintosh 10.6.7 or above.
ATI 6870 package
just added a bin image to netkas ATY_Init, should work for most card models.
if you are on Lion, you ONLY need to install the ATY_init.
This should work with Steam, DVD Player etc without crashing.

NOTE:
what doesnt work with this ATY init:
- second dvi port
- dvi->vga adapter on upper dvi port, for vga displays you will need active mdp->vga

Have you asked Cindori?

i sent him a private message. I'm going to complete the clean install first however. The first time i tried to "clean install" all my programs and everything were still there.

I can confirm however that my 6870 gave me a [EDIT: login screen] with my old hard drive which still have lion on it. I was wrong about that in my first post, and that gives me a lot of hope on this one, as it implies it isn't an issue with the hard drive itself. I'm going to erase the entire os-x partition, and install with a usb boot disc i think. Hopefully a true clean install will work.

the issue im trying to resolve is getting a clean install to acutally work properly. first time i tried i didn't erase the os-x partition, so it was as if the reinstall did nothing at all, probably because of of the recovery partition. This time i erased before attempting the install, will update you all when i'm done.

that package is only useful for 10.6.6, it shouldn't be around anymore

that said, no OS install should have any effect on whether you get boot screen or not, only a system firmware can alter that

ISSUE RESOLVED:D
If anyone else experiences this issue do a true clean install, i.e. erase the partition. Work for me.

Lastly, i said this to cindori in the message i sent him, but i just want to thank him (as well as netkas and any others) for all the information and work they have provided to me and the community regarding graphics cards, i would not have never been able to attempt this upgrade without the knowledge you all... and im not even trying flash with zeus or freya. Again, thanks so much for the work you guys put in. I will definitely be making a donation once i transfer some cash to paypal, something i have never done!

indeed. It was troubling being unable to undo the instalation of the ATIgraphicsupgrade without a erasing the partition, but that has solved the issue, the OS and my graphics card is now functioning well.

Part of me said just leave it alone... but i went ahead and installed the Kext. DVD player is now working.

And now i'm not going to make a single change to anything for at least 2 weeks :p
Edit: P.S. feel free to check out my other thread of small issues with drive sleep settings :)
