I tried getting help from the HP website but because the printers out of warranty, all I can do is post in their forums. Which I did a week ago but haven't received any responses. So hopefully someone here can help :)

We have two HP printers in our home. The first is an HP Envy 5643 e-All-in-One that's about three years old, and it's temperamental but works great. I got it to replace an HP Photosmart C4250 All-in-One that's about six years old since it's not wireless. Now I do far more scanning but my garage office is opposite where the HP Envy is setup and constantly going insides a hassle. So I've setup the HP Photosmart C4250 in my office but it's not working like it should. When I turned it on my Mac installed an update but it happened so fast I don't know what updated. Then I tried to scan but pressing the "Scan" button gets an error on the printer screen that says "USB not connected". BUT if I go into System Preferences and open the scanner utility it scans just fine, so there's nothing wrong with the USB.

The HP website has a doc, "USB Scanner Connection Error (Mac)" that lists things to try to resolve the issue. I tried the first three, that's basic troubleshooting steps, and didn't resolve the issue. Now it says to uninstall the printer driver and software. But the other printer is finally setup to work like I want it to and I'm scared of uninstalling something that could mess it up :(

Can anyone offer advice on how I go about doing this, or even an alternative to try to resolve the issue?

Thanks in advance to anyone who replies!

i'm using alternative software for scanning and printing on my mbp17. when i installed the officejet for my aunt the original hp software for scanning didn't work. instead i installed the scanning software i'm using on my mbp17: vuescan. it's not free but i'm happy with it and it can be tested for free (watermarks on scans). see https://www.hamrick.com/

for my prehistoric hp deskjet 990C i'm using the free gutenprint drivers. see http://gimp-print.sourceforge.net/MacOSX.php
before the free gutenprint drivers supported duplex printing on my printer i used printfab. see https://www.printfab.net/
