I just installed boot camp, but I can only use the internet for about 5 minutes until I get the box, "limited or no connectivity" and the internet goes out. I see that I have a 169 ip address. I used the command "ipconfig" and got this information:

Microsoft Windows XP [Version 5.1.2600]
(C) Copyright 1985-2001 Microsoft Corp.

CDocuments and Settings\ja>ipconfig

Windows IP Configuration

Ethernet adapter Local Area Connection:

Media State . . . . . . . . . . . : Media disconnected

Ethernet adapter Bluetooth Network Connection:

Media State . . . . . . . . . . . : Media disconnected

Ethernet adapter Wireless Network Connection:

Connection-specific DNS Suffix . :
Autoconfiguration IP Address. . . : 169.254.213.204
Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.0.0
Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . :

Please help me fix this, I'm going insane trying to figure it out.

Yeah I put in the official mac install disk and it installed all drivers from it. But I'm not sure if I'm using DHCP, how do I check if it's on?

Open up a command prompt window using Start -> Run and type in cmd and hit return

In the window that opens up type in ipconfig /all

If you see a line like this one your running DHCP :-

DHCP Server . . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.1.1

Looking at the first line it looks like its a driver issue or the network cable isn't connected.

From my understanding, if you ever have an IP address that starts with 169 it's a router problem/issue (I'm not 100% sure on this though). 169.x.x.x is a private IP address assigned when it cannot send a request to a DHCP server.

Good news, I think I fixed it. I went to my dads computer and got the ip from that computer and then put that into my settings, except one number higher. Now I've used the internet for 11 hours and it hasn't disconnected once! Wooo!

For a safe and permanent fix, you should configure your computer to use an IP address outside your router's DHCP range. Otherwise your router may try to assign the address you've given your computer.
