Need Help with CS4 Illustrator Urgent!!!

I really need help, I have been using freehand at collage and have got myself CS4, Im not in collage today but have a deadline soon and I thought I would be Ok because I have CS4. Wrong!

In freehand there are loads of tools to combine multiple objects into one complex shape. like Join, stamp, divide ect... but how do you do it in Illustrator?Im really stuck
