Hi,

I am trying to organize an external HD for a friend of mine, a PC user. When I plug the HD into my iBook, the computer recognizes the drive, but I am not able to modify the folders in any way. It tells me that the drive is read only. Is there a simple solution to this problem? Is it something I can fix on my end, or do settings have to be changed from my friend's PC?

if the drive was configured under windows you will only be able to she the files in the drive. if the drive was configured with mac OS then you would be able to modify or move files then.

The drive is probably formatted to NTFS, which can only be read by a Mac - no write access is possible (because Microsoft hasn't released the info on how to do it). If the drive can be re-formatted to FAT32 then it can be read and written by Windows and OS X.
