I currently have broadband with VoIP through my ISP, Insight. I would like to set up port forwarding so I can access my home network from out of the house.
Currently, I have a RCA/Thomson DHG536 box. I don't think it is a traditional router, to this would have been easy. I think it is a E-MTA, where a cable modem is combined with a VoIP adaptor. This box is connected to the cable and then I run an ethernet cable between this box and my AirPort Extreme Base Station. I then use the AEBS as my wireless router to connect my Macs running Lion. I also have a Synology DS212j NAS hooked up to the AEBS that I would like to specifically access from the road. So, in this set-up, what exactly is the router? If the RCA/Thomson DHG536 is not a router, but just a modem, then is the AEBS acting as the router?
Then, would I do my port forwarding by configuring it on AEBS? Or, do I need to buy a router to connect between the DHG536 and the AEBS and then configuring port forwarding on this new router?
