Hi everyone.

I have a 3G with the 3.0 software (I didn't update to the 3.0.1). When I had 2.x, I did a jailbreak. I followed the instructions exactly how they were written, but I ended up losing all my contacts, photos, etc. I couldn't figure out how to get that stuff back, and that obviously sucked. I eventually went back to the default/non-jailbreak.

Now, I would like to try to jailbreak again, but I want to make sure that I do NOT lose my contacts, photos, apps, etc. Just want to jailbreak, and at the same time have everything on my phone stay as is.

What are the steps to do this? I am looking at the guide that explains how to do the jailbreak, but I don't trust that since I followed it last time, and ended up losing everything. There are no explicit instructions on how to essentially save all the contacts, photos, etc. on my computer/itunes, and how to get it all back after the jailbreak.

So, if anyone can please tell me in detail how to do that, I would greatly appreciate it. I don't really know too much when it comes to backup/syncing/etc. and so I really need help with this.

TIA!!

Look at my signature. There is a link for the iPhone being jailbroken there. Very helpful thread.

Thanks.

I still can't seem to figure it out though...

I checked the link, and the guide was the same one that I was reading. It doesn't indicate how to save all of your contacts, apps, music, etc. on itunes/your computer before jailbreaking, and how to put everything back after the jailbreak.

I watched the video for the walkthrough on how to jailbreak, and I seem to remember one of the beginning parts of the process, "download the latest firmware...later shift + restore in itunes" being one of the things that I thought made me lose all my contacts/photos/apps when I tried jailbreaking on 2.x. So, still not sure what to do beforehand to avoid screwing up like last time.

Thanks.

You see there is also RedSn0w. Using that prevents the loss of your information (contacts, calender events). Read over that section. Also, redSn0w is easier.

If you sync your phone before you jailbreak (make sure under summary you are syncing all the stuff you want back), after you jailbreak, you sync again. All the stuff you synced will come back. I have done this numerous times and never lost a contact or a photo. Address book and iPhoto have always put everything back.

If you have not figured out how to sync your phone, I would advise you NOT to attempt a jailbreak procedure !!

Website teaches you how to jailbreak; they rarely teach you how to back up your data because it's pretty obvious that sync is the official method to back up your contacts, pictures, etc. You never sync your iPhone? You better learn how that works!
