Need help, with videos specifically...

Hello,

I have a Windows VIsta machine, and plan to buy an iPhone. I want to use the 8gbs for only videos, seeing as I would really rather have videos than music.

However, that leas me to my questions:

~Has the iphone video format/resolution been announced?
~What app can I use to convert the videos I have?
~And lastly, roughly how big is a 30 min TV episode in the itunes format (the one you purchase on the store)?

I have an extensive movie collection ripped from my DVD collection, and what to buy an external hard drive for only iPhone formated movies. The questions is how to I format the movies, what resolution, what format, etc?

Any ideas, thanks in advance.

The resolution of iPhone is 480x320, on mac I use Handbrake, and I believe they do have a Windows client now, and a 1hour TV episode I've bought from iTunes (Heroes) is about 500MB

I don't suggest you use the iTunes video format, besides the nasty DRM such that you can't downconvert the shows, their bitrate is laughably high for being so poorly encoded. Most 'homemade' content on the web is much nicer quality.

Use quicktime or a 3rd-party h.264 converter, convert the videos such that they are 480x*** (with stars for the vertical resolution - calculate this by dividing the video's aspect ratio into 480 and going for the nearest even number) at 256kbs and 64kbs AAC audio. This may sound low (iTunes is 1500kbs h.264) but it actually looks fine with minimal noticeable problems. If you really wanted to ensure good quality, go 512kbs but the difference is slight. In any case, you'll get way more mileage out of your phone. Full movies are now only 200-300mb.

I assuming any mpeg4, mov, h.264 (.mp4 formats and .mov formats basically) will playback fine on the iPhone so long as the are 640x480 or smaller. There is no "video format" to speak of, just ways to make the size ideal.
