Hi, I just got my new (and first) mac, a 12" PB. I tried downloading firefox and there's a .dmg file on my desktop. then when i click on it this only icon appears. i'm not sure how this works. can anyone help and clearified this? sorry for the noob question

That .dmg file is a Disk Image file. Double-clicking it will mount a "disk" on your desktop, probably called something like "Firefox."

Open that disk image, and inside will be the application you need. If it's an installer, run it. If it's the actual application, drag it to your Applications folder and run it.
