I recently bought a pre owned 2008 mac pro and I would like to install vista via boot camp. The computer came pre loaded with snow leopard but the install disc was not supplied and I only have the os x install discs that come as standard with the system. Can these be used for boot camp or will I loose snow leopard when installing vista?

I'm not sure that Leopard BootCamp can partition SL. But what I did was not even use BootCamp. Pop a HD into another bay and install Windows natively on that disk. The drivers are downloadable, and that way you have an isolated drive you can corrupt with Windows to your heart's content, far away from the happy land of Mac OS.

You should be able to use the Snow Leopard "Boot Camp Assistant" app (in the Applications/Utilities folder on your hard disk) to partition your drive & install Vista. Snow leopard will be safe. You only need the Snow Leopard/Leopard disc to install drivers in Vista. Everything should be fine using the Leopard drivers, however you won't be able to read your mac files from Windows, and drivers will be out of date. It would be a good idea to get the latest drivers for your graphics card from the manufacturer if they are available.

You could pick-up snow leopard at a later date (it's pretty cheap) and use the snow leopard disc to install new drivers then. You can use any snow leopard disc to install the drivers. I'm sure they are also available via alternative (read: illegal) means, too, but I'm not going to encourage or discuss that.

I can't believe they didn't give you the SL disks, maybe it's no surprise considering apple are such rip-offs.

But yes it should work fine through bootcamp and leave SL in original condition, but the separate HD idea from eawmp1 sounds like a good idea
