Hello all,
I'm looking to create a home theater and i need audio suggestions. I want nice clean and loud sound. it doesnt have to be surround but 5.1 would be nice. I'm looking into computer audio setups due to their price and they dont need an amplifier. It can either be a USB or mini jack audio connection. I like the look of the Bose setups (companion 3 & 5) but is there better options for the cost/performance ratio. My budget is up to 400 on the audio setup. Please post a link or model numbers so that i can research your suggestions.

Thanks, and Happy Easter!
Chris

All external speaker systems require an amplifier.

Here's the descendent of the Onkyo system that have for my home theater setup listed in my Sig. It'll set you back $240 sans shipping. If you have the room, it's the way to go. All you'll need is a Toslink cable with a mini-jack or adapter on one end for your Mac, and you'll have digital optical output for Dolby Digital or DTS 5.1 from DVDs, or Dolby Digital from movie files transcoded with Handbrake 0.9.2.

Thanks for the link but Im kinda looking for somethign that DOESNT have an amp. Something that is self powered. I know the bose system probably has the amp in the Sub and thats ok... but shelf space is very limited... so an extra amp is somethign Id like to avoid...if possible

Any other suggestions for great sound?

Chris

i saw this cool Full home movie theater set up but i cant remember where with McCantosh (not mac) amps and a Mac pro as the Media server with a 7.1 set up it was cool:)

"no highs or lows......must be bose" what a car audio friend always used to say.

bose just has very poor sound quality.....excellent marketing......poor overall sound quality.

Because somebody is trying to start yet another Bose argument in a thread. Some people don't like Bose for their own reasons, but in the end, what it always comes down to before the thread gets locked is personal opinions on the subject. A lot of people say how there is no quality and high prices, but I have owned several Bose products in the past and I can say that I love the quality of the sound, and that the price suits the sound quite well for my needs.

I'm not trying to start an argument; there shouldn't even be an argument. Bose may make products that are perfectly fine, but you are doing yourself a disservice if you don't look at comparable products, even at a fraction of Bose's prices. Give me a Bose product, I can come up with another brand that makes a better product at a lower price.
