Need info on iOS devices and wireless speakers

Hello,

I'm an old hand at Mac OS, but very new at iOS. I'm wondering if this scenario is possible with an iPod touch (4th) or an iPad (3rd).

Let's say I want speakers in my kitchen, living room and in the backyard, and I want to be able to control which one play the music from my idevice. For example: I walk into my living room, select the living room speakers directly on my ipod touch, and start playing music from there. Later if I go outside, I simply select a new set of speakers from the ipod.

Is this possible?

how are you planning on hooking these speakers up? airplay?

if it's airplay there's 2 ways to do it.

if you run itunes on your computer and use apple's remote app to control it, you can send to multiple speakers at the same time in sync. you can connect/disconnect and control the volume of each speaker individually, both from iTunes and on your ios device.

if you are playing the music directly on your iOS device, you can play to one speaker at a time. this setting is available in a couple places, including the lock screen, so you can change it pretty easily as you move rooms.

for airplay, if you already have speakers, the airport express is your best option. you can get the old style for $70 in the refurb store.

or if there's a TV in the location you can get an TV. (means your television would probably have to be on to listen to music)

if you have nothing in the location check out airplayspeakers.com there are several options, you can get either a A/V receiver unit (I have this one) and add speakers, or get a self contained unit. (I have an iW2 from ihome, it sounds pretty good, they also make a battery powered version)
