Hi,

I'm creating an app that needs a compass feature. In an attempt to follow the HIG as closely as possible, I'd need someone to upload a screenshot of the iPhone Compass.app (with the wooden background) at the original resolution.
Unfortunately, I only have a first gen iPod touch, otherwise I'd of course do this myself :)

Thanks in advance!

The Compass.app UI is a copyrighted entity with the copyrights owned by Apple. You cannot rip it off (especially the graphics in it) for your own app. As far as I am aware the HIG says nothing about the compass.

Getting inspired doesn't mean ripping. For example, take the "Islamic Compass" iPhone app. They didn't rip from Apple's Compass.app UI, but the very clearly took it as an example.

EDIT: How far does UI copyrighting actually go? Is having an app that looks similar in layout and works the same way without ripping code or UI elements considered copyright infringement?

Then you'd probably be fine. But if you don't need the UI elements and are going to make your own from scratch then I don't see why you need the screenshot. You can see what it looks like here. The only reason you'd need a screenshot off an actual device would be if you were going to use the image.
