Okay, so here's the problem. If I plug in my iPod (3G) via firewire, it shows up on the desktop like normal, and iTunes opens. Then the trouble begins. Once the iTunes window opens, it hangs on the library window, my iPod never shows up in the source list, and about 10 seconds later iTunes goes into a perpetual beachball mode. The last time this happened, my entire computer locked up and I had to do a hard reboot. Not even option-apple-escape did anything.

Normally I don't get the complete freeze, but I still can't force quit iTunes.

HELP!!

Have you tried running it thorugh updater?

I know when my ipod was having troubles, updater wouldn't even recognize it. If the problem is hardware/firmware, you might need a replacement.

It shows up fine in the updater (it says my iPod is up to date). I'm thinking of trying to install a previous version of iTunes (I have 4.9 now)

Here's how I think of it.

Here's the chronology I'm thinking of:
1. What you said- an older iTunes
2. restore via updater
3. get a new iPod
