Need LCD Monitor help

Hi, I'm looking to buy a 17" LCD monitor for my powerbook. I would like take advantage of the DVI out on my PB and I would like to spend 250-300.

I use my computer for basic word and web stuff, but I also do some photoshop (photo editing), indesign, movie making, and DVD watching.

I would like to get the best LCD I can for my $$$

I'm not sure if it's in your price range, but NEC and Samsung make some really nice monitors. I think LGs are pretty nice too.

dell make excellent LCD monitors, yeah yeah i know "dell":-( but i had an 1704fpv ultrasharp monitor connected to my mac mini and it was superb specs and price wise. check the website for deals, there is always someting going on.

Which dell 1704FP?

Let me add a little helpful info. Things to look for:


Response Time - the Liquid crystals need time to respond, resulting in ghosting. I have one with a 12ms time, and it's fine.

Contrast Ratio: The higher the better, Probably minimum you want is 400:1

Brightness: I think 300 cmd is pretty good, but I could be wrong


I think those are some of the major differences between panels. But since you're a mac user, I know you'll just buy whatever one looks best anyways

i think it was the 1704fpv as stated above but im not sure, i sold it a couple of months ago when i got rid of my mac mini. excellent montior though

So the less MS the better? Cause one of the dells I saw was 25ms (that seems like a bit long)

Yeah, the shorter the response time the better. That's the time it takes the pixels to change colors. 1000:1 is about as good as it gets.

The response time is a completely unreliable spec because there is no standard for measurement. One company's 12 could be the same as another company's 20.

Fast(est) response time is significant only for watching videos or gaming.

So does anyone have a specific model to recommend?

I made a list of dell LCDs I was looking and gave it to my dad to see how much they cost with the discount he gets from his company.

I wrote down:
Dell 1704fpt (ultrasharp)
Dell 1704fpv (ultrasharp)
Dell 1905fp (ultrasharp)
Dell 2005fpw (ultrasharp)
and then the basic E-series 17 & 19" LCDs

I'll see what the prices are when he gets home tonight if he had enough time to look at them or if he was able to have someone do it for him.
